Caroline Inglis made her first cut in a major championship on Friday at Congressional Country Club with an impressive round of 4-under 68, moving her to 4-under 140 and elevating her into contention for the weekend at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship.
Not only that, her performance leaves her 1-up in 2022 major championships against her brother, Colin, who is a PGA Club Professional at Shadow Hills Country Club in Junction City, Oregon. (Caroline played her college golf at Oregon, becoming a two-time Pac-12 champion.)
Colin played in his first major championship last month as part of the PGA of America’s Team of 20 that competed at the 104th PGA Championship at Southern Hills Country Club. He missed the cut.
“She beat me bad,” said Colin on Friday, laughing, comparing their performances. “My only advice to her before this week was to play better than I did.”
Caroline’s opening 72 included a double-bogey at the par-5 16th hole, which was the only bad blemish on her card during a difficult day. Friday, she made six birdies at Congressional. And now she not only will compete on the weekend, but she will do so in contention.
“It is about competing and winning, but the way I am approaching it is not going to change,” she said. “It is still about picking smart targets and hitting good golf shots.”
Caroline’s best season was in 2018, when she finished 79th in earnings on the LPGA. She missed the following season with a back injury.
Colin Inglis had a great summer in 2021, finishing in the top 10 in all the major events conducted by the PGA Northwest Section.
Colin said he and Caroline will play matches over Thanksgiving and Christmas. With a chuckle, he said, “She has only beat me once in her life.”
Oops. Better make that twice.
